West Bay: hotels for business and the Corniche
West Bay is Doha’s business district, with its skyline of towers, ministries and embassies at the northern end of the Corniche. The Corniche promenade runs south from here towards the Museum of Islamic Art and Souq Waqif.

Lusail is Qatar’s newest city, north of West Bay. It is home to Lusail Marina, the sabre-shaped Katara Towers, the Place Vendôme mall and Lusail Boulevard. It has a polished, modern feel and is well placed for events at Lusail’s stadium and venues. If you are looking at hotels in Lusail, most are high-end and waterfront.
Getting around
The Red Line reaches Lusail at Legtaifiya and at Lusail QNB, its northern terminus. Both connect to the Lusail Tram, and the Orange and Pink tram lines serve the Marina stations. At the time of writing a single tram trip is listed at QR 2, and a QR 6 day pass covers the tram and the Doha Metro. Katara Cultural Village has its own Red Line stop, one of the closest cultural sights to Lusail.

The Pearl: Porto Arabia and island living
The Pearl is a man-made island between West Bay and Lusail, known for its marinas, waterfront cafés and Mediterranean-style districts such as Porto Arabia, Qanat Quartier and Medina Centrale. Getting around
There is no metro station on the island itself. The developer introduced a free M110 Metrolink bus between The Pearl and Legtaifiya station, with stops including Porto Arabia and Medina Centrale. Check the current route on the Qatar Rail or Mowasalat apps before relying on it. Taxis and ride-hailing are the easy option for evenings out.

Msheireb, Souq Waqif and old Doha
For a first visit, central old Doha is hard to beat for sightseeing on foot. Souq Waqif is the restored traditional market with restaurants, spice stalls and the falcon souq. Next door, Msheireb Downtown Doha is a regenerated district of shaded streets and heritage house museums. The Museum of Islamic Art and the southern end of the Corniche are close by.
Getting around
Msheireb station is the network’s main interchange, where the Red, Gold and Green Lines meet, so you can reach West Bay, Lusail, the airport, Education City and Al Aziziya from one place. Souq Waqif has its own Gold Line stop.

West of the centre, the Al Aziziya and Aspire area is built around Aspire Zone, Khalifa International Stadium and Villaggio Mall. It suits visitors in town for a sporting event, families who want parks and malls nearby, and travellers who prefer to be away from the busy centre.
Getting around
Al Aziziyah is the western end of the Gold Line and has a signposted walk to Villaggio. Sport City station, one stop earlier, serves Khalifa International Stadium. Plan on roughly 30 to 40 minutes by metro from central Doha, with a change at Msheireb if you are coming from the airport.
Getting from Hamad International Airport
- Metro: the Red Line starts at Hamad International Airport station, linked to the arrivals area. Trains run into central Doha via Msheireb, then on to West Bay, Katara and Lusail. Depending on the service, you may need to change at Oqba Ibn Nafie, so follow the platform signs. At the time of writing the metro caps daily fares at QR 6; buy a card from station machines.
- Karwa taxi: follow signs to the official Taxi Pavilion at the left end of the Arrivals Hall. Qatar Living reported a QR 25 starting fare for airport taxis at the time of writing.
- Ride-hailing: Uber operates in Qatar, and the airport also lists Badrgo and Ryde. Pick-up is at a marked point in the car park, reached through Gate 3. Careem ended its ride-hailing service in Qatar in February 2023.
- Hotel transfers: many hotels arrange cars on request, and Discover Qatar, Qatar Airways’ destination management company, sells airport transfers and stopover hotel packages. Qatar Airways Holidays bundles flights and hotels.
When to visit Doha
Visit Qatar describes October to May as the best period for outdoor activities, with the winter months from November to February the most comfortable for sightseeing, beaches and the souqs. June to August is intensely hot and humid, so summer stays centre on air-conditioned malls, museums and hotel pools. Rain is rare and mostly falls in winter. Hotel rates in Doha tend to rise during major events, so book early if your dates coincide with one.
Practical tips for visitors
Dress code
Visit Qatar says attitudes to dress are relaxed, but men and women are expected to avoid excessively revealing clothing in public. In practice, covering shoulders and knees in malls, souqs and museums is the safe choice. Swimwear is fine at hotel pools and beaches. Public displays of affection are frowned upon.
Alcohol
Alcohol is served only in licensed venues, mainly bars and restaurants in hotels. The minimum drinking age is 21, and venues ask for photo ID. Drinking in public or being drunk in public is an offence, and you cannot bring alcohol into Qatar through the airport. Rules can change, so check with your hotel.
Ramadan
During Ramadan, visitors should not eat, drink or smoke in public during daylight hours. Many hotels keep restaurants open for guests, and opening hours around the city change.
Money and apps
The Qatari riyal is the only currency used, and ATMs are common in malls and hotels. Download the Karwa, Uber and Qatar Rail apps before you arrive.
