Overview

Msheireb Downtown Doha is a regenerated neighbourhood in the oldest part of the capital, right next to Souq Waqif and the Amiri Diwan. The old Msheireb area was cleared and rebuilt as a walkable district of shaded lanes, courtyards, shops, hotels and offices. It was designed to reflect traditional Qatari building styles while using modern, energy-saving technology. A free tram loops through the streets.

For visitors, the main draw is the Msheireb Museums: four restored heritage houses with free entry. They cover family life, the early oil industry, the history of slavery and the story of the district itself. Add the M7 design hub, the open square at Barahat Msheireb and plenty of cafés and restaurants. Msheireb Metro station, where all three lines meet, sits inside the district.

History and background

Msheireb is one of Doha's oldest neighbourhoods. By the late 20th century many of its buildings were run down. Qatar Foundation set up Msheireb Properties to rebuild the area as a new city centre. After several years of research with architects and specialists, the team drew up design principles based on traditional Qatari architecture, such as narrow shaded streets, courtyards and light-coloured walls.

Construction began in January 2010 and ran in phases until the final phase was completed in March 2022. The project covers about 31 hectares and cost around US$5.5 billion. Many buildings target LEED Gold or Platinum ratings, with thousands of solar panels for power and hot water.

Four historic houses were restored between 2011 and 2015 by architect John McAslan and opened as the Msheireb Museums in October 2015. The free Msheireb Tram, powered by onboard energy rather than overhead wires, began service in December 2019.

What to see at Msheireb Downtown Doha

  1. Msheireb Museums

Four restored houses, all free. Radwani House shows traditional family life, Company House covers early oil workers, Mohammed Bin Jassim House tells the district's own story, and Bin Jelmood House examines the history of slavery.

  2. Bin Jelmood House

This museum looks at slavery across history, with a focus on the Indian Ocean trade. It uses personal stories and audio-visual displays. It is thoughtful and moving, and worth at least an hour.

  3. Msheireb Tram

A free, air-conditioned tram runs a two-kilometre loop with nine stops through the district. A full circuit takes about 18 minutes and is an easy way to get your bearings.

  4. M7

Qatar's hub for design and fashion hosts major exhibitions, a café and a concept store for regional design. It sits by Barahat Msheireb; check the website for current shows and times.

  5. Barahat Msheireb

This large pedestrian square is the social heart of the district. It is lined with cafés and restaurants and often hosts events and markets in the cooler months.

  6. Architecture and streets

Walk the shaded lanes to see how modern buildings borrow from old Qatari design: courtyards, narrow alleys, screened windows and pale stone. The streets are calm and easy to explore on foot.

  7. Next door: Souq Waqif

The traditional market is a few minutes' walk away. Combine the two for an afternoon of museums followed by dinner and shopping in the souq.
