Place Vendôme Mall, Lusail

Overview

Place Vendôme is one of Qatar's largest shopping malls. It stands in Lusail, about 11 km north of central Doha, and opened in April 2022. The design borrows from French architecture, with symmetrical façades, arcades and a glass-roofed atrium. Around 580 stores cover luxury, premium and mid-range brands. There are also cinemas, family attractions, restaurants and a five-star hotel. Entry to the mall is free.

Many visitors come for the setting as much as the shopping. A canal runs through the complex, lined with cafés, and an outdoor plaza hosts a choreographed fountain show with music and lights. It is fully air-conditioned, so it is a practical choice on hot summer days. Evenings and weekends are lively, and the mall regularly hosts seasonal events and celebrations.

History and background

Place Vendôme was developed by United Developers, a group of Qatari investors. Construction began in March 2014 and took around eight years. The mall opened on 15 April 2022, a few months before Qatar hosted the FIFA World Cup.

The name and style come from the Place Vendôme square in Paris, and the central atrium takes its cue from the city's Grand Palais. Buildings are arranged around courtyards and linked by arcades, giving the feel of a small French quarter rather than a single box.

The whole complex covers about 1.15 million square metres of built-up area. Alongside the shops it includes hotel and residential space, with Le Royal Méridien among the hotels on site. It was designed for up to 100,000 visitors a day and has around 7,000 parking spaces.

What to see at Place Vendôme (Lusail)

1. Dancing fountains

   A choreographed fountain in the outdoor plaza combines water jets, music and lighting. Shows run regularly in the afternoon and evening; check current times, which have changed since opening.

2. The canal

   A water canal runs through the inside and outside of the mall. Cafés and restaurants line its banks, making it a pleasant place to sit after shopping.

3. Luxury wing

   A dedicated luxury area gathers international designer labels such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada and Cartier. It is quieter and more formal than the main shopping floors.

4. Parisian architecture

   Arcades, symmetrical façades and a glass-roofed atrium inspired by the Grand Palais give the mall its look. It is one of the most photographed interiors in Lusail.

5. Family entertainment

   Attractions include a Novo Cinemas complex, the Trocadero theme park area, escape rooms and other play venues, so it works well for a family day out.

6. Dining

   Restaurants and cafés range from quick food-court meals to sit-down dining beside the canal. Many stay open late, especially at weekends and during public holidays.
