Overview
Lusail Stadium is the biggest stadium in Qatar and the venue where Argentina beat France in the 2022 FIFA World Cup final. It stands in Lusail, about 20 km north of central Doha. Its golden bowl-shaped shell is inspired by the traditional fanar lantern and by patterned bowls from Arab and Islamic art. Outside of events you can see and photograph it from the surrounding area.
The stadium is not a regular walk-in attraction. The interior is usually open only on match and event days, and tour operators mostly offer exterior photo stops. The best way to see the inside is to buy a ticket for a match or event. Since the World Cup it has hosted the AFC Asian Cup final, the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final and the FIFA Arab Cup final.
History and background
Lusail Stadium was built as the centrepiece venue for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Foster + Partners led the design, with Populous also involved. Construction began in 2017. The architects based the form on the fanar lantern and on decorated bowls and vessels, wrapping the bowl in a gold-coloured façade with triangular openings.
The stadium hosted ten World Cup matches, including the final on 18 December 2022. Argentina drew 3–3 with France after extra time and won 4–2 on penalties in front of a crowd of 88,966. Like other World Cup venues it uses solar-powered cooling and earned a five-star GSAS sustainability rating.
Since then it has staged the opening match and final of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, the 2024 FIFA Intercontinental Cup final and the 2025 FIFA Arab Cup final. The planned 2026 Finalissima there was cancelled in March 2026. Long-term plans cut seating to about 40,000 and add community uses.
