Umm Salal Mohammed Fort, Qatar

Overview

Umm Salal Mohammed Fort is a fortified house complex in the town of Umm Salal Mohammed, about 20 km north of Doha. It was built around 1910 by the town's founder, Sheikh Mohammed bin Jassim Al Thani. It stands roughly 900 metres west of the Barzan Towers. Some guides use the name for the towers themselves, but they are separate sites.

The fort is private and not open to visitors in 2026; it can only be viewed from the outside. It is still worth a short stop if you are visiting the Barzan Towers, which are a Qatar Museums heritage site. Together they show how a ruling family lived and protected its wells and farms a century ago. Plan it as a brief photo stop rather than a full visit.

History and background

Sheikh Mohammed bin Jassim Al Thani, a son of Qatar's founder Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed, established Umm Salal Mohammed in about 1910. He built this fortified residence near a date-palm grove, and the nearby Barzan watchtowers guarded the wells and farmland around it.

The fort is more of a large fortified home than a military castle. Its walls are made of limestone and clay and finished inside and out with local gypsum plaster. Arabic sources describe high walls with crenellated tops and firing slits, and rooms including reception halls, family quarters, stores, a kitchen and a bath.

By the 1970s the buildings had fallen into ruin. They have since been restored as part of a redevelopment, but the complex remains private property. Visitors who want to go inside a heritage building here should head to the Barzan Towers instead, which Qatar Museums manages.

What to see at Umm Salal Mohammed Fort

1. The fort's exterior

   View the thick plastered walls, parapets and gateways from outside. The building gives a clear idea of how a leading family's home was designed to double as a defensive compound in early 20th-century Qatar.

2. Barzan Towers

   About 900 metres east, the restored Barzan Towers are the area's main heritage attraction. They were built as lookouts over wells and farmland and have been restored more than once. Check opening status first.

3. Traditional building methods

   Look for the materials used across Qatar's old forts: coral rock, limestone and mud mortar, covered with gypsum plaster. The pale, smooth finish helped keep interiors cooler in the heat.

4. Umm Salal Mohammed town

   The town grew around the sheikh's residence and farms. Today it is a quiet suburb, easy to combine with trips north to Al Khor or with Lusail on the way back to Doha.

5. Photography

   Early morning and late afternoon light show off the textured walls best. Photograph from public areas only and respect any signs, as the fort is private property.
