Singing Sand Dunes, Qatar

Overview

The Singing Sand Dunes rise from the desert inland of Mesaieed, around 40 km south-west of Doha and 40–50 minutes by car. They are steep, crescent-shaped barchan dunes. When dry sand slides down the steep face, the grains rub together and can make a low humming or booming sound. Singing dunes are rare worldwide, which makes this an unusual stop.

The site is free and has no gate, staff or opening hours. It suits a short morning or late-afternoon outing, alone or as part of a desert safari. Climb to the crest, then slide or run down the slip face to try to set off the sound. It does not always work. Wind, dry weather and the right kind of sand all matter, so treat the hum as a bonus.

History and background

Singing, or booming, sand is a natural effect found at only a few dozen dune sites around the world. It happens when a layer of dry, well-sorted sand avalanches down the steep leeward side of a dune. The grains move together and make the air vibrate, producing a low hum that can last several seconds.

Qatar's singing dunes are barchans, crescent-shaped dunes with their horns pointing downwind. The curved shape helps to focus the sound. Humidity, dust and damp sand stop the effect, which is why it is most likely on dry, breezy days.

The dunes have been a favourite weekend spot for Doha residents for many years. They are not a managed attraction, and there are no official visitor services, but they appear on many desert-safari itineraries south of the city.

What to see at Singing Sand Dunes

1. Hear the dunes hum

   Climb to the crest and slide or run down the steep slip face. On a dry day the moving sand can produce a deep, engine-like hum. The bigger the avalanche of sand, the louder the sound.

2. Climb the crest

   The steep dune faces make for a short but tiring climb. From the top you get wide views over the flat desert towards Mesaieed and a good sense of the dune's crescent shape.

3. Sandboarding

   The steep leeward slopes are good for sandboarding or simply sliding down. Bring your own board, or book a desert safari that includes one. Children usually love this part of the visit.

4. Sunset photography

   Late afternoon light brings out ripples and ridges in the sand. The curved dune lines make strong compositions, and the heat eases as the sun drops.

5. Picnic in the desert

   The flat ground near the dunes is popular for simple picnics in the cooler months. There is no shade or service, so bring a mat, water and a bag for your rubbish.

Tips for your visit

• Visit on a dry, breezy day. Damp or dusty sand rarely hums.
• Wear closed shoes; the sand gets very hot by late morning.
• Do not drive a saloon car onto soft sand. Park on firm ground by the road.
• Bring plenty of water. There are no shops, toilets or shade at the dunes.
• Keep clear of dune bashers and quad bikes that may use the area.
• Take your rubbish home and leave the desert as you found it.
