Overview

Khor Al Adaid, known as the Inland Sea, lies about 80 km south of Doha near the border with Saudi Arabia. A narrow channel from the Gulf winds inland and opens into a wide lagoon ringed by high dunes. It is a protected nature reserve and one of the few places in the world where large sand dunes meet the sea.

There is no paved road, so the trip itself is part of the experience. Most visitors join a desert safari that includes dune driving, a swim in the calm, warm water and time to watch the sunset. Entry is free. For many residents and tourists, it is the most memorable day trip in Qatar.

History and background

Khor Al Adaid sits in Al Wakrah municipality, in Qatar's far south-east. A tidal inlet about 10 km long cuts through the dunes and opens into a lagoon. The surrounding landscape mixes shifting sand dunes, some over 40 metres high, with salt flats (sabkha) and tidal flats.

Qatar declared the area a nature reserve in 2007. In March 2008 it was added to UNESCO's Tentative List for World Heritage status. The nomination highlights how rare it is to see mobile dunes meet a tidal lagoon, and the active salt-flat processes that geologists study here.

The reserve supports dugongs, sea turtles, ospreys and Arabian gazelles. Its southern shore lies close to the border with Saudi Arabia, and it remains Qatar's largest protected area.

What to see at Khor Al Adaid (Inland Sea)

1. Dune drive

   The journey from Sealine to the water crosses big dunes by 4×4, which takes roughly an hour. Experienced drivers climb and descend steep slopes, which is thrilling but can be rough on the stomach.

2. Swimming in the Inland Sea

   The water is shallow, calm and warm for most of the year. Swimming here, with tall dunes rising straight from the shore, is the highlight of most trips.

3. Sunset over the dunes

   Late-afternoon tours are timed so you watch the sun set over the sand and water. The light turns the dunes gold and orange, which makes this the best time for photos.

4. Sandboarding and dune climbing

   Many tours bring sandboards. Climbing a tall dune on foot is hard work in soft sand, but the view over the lagoon from the top is worth it.

5. Camel rides and quad bikes

   Visit Qatar lists camel riding and quad biking among the activities in the area. They are usually added to a desert safari, so ask your tour operator what is included.

6. Wildlife and birdwatching

   This protected reserve is home to ospreys and other birds, and its waters support dugongs and sea turtles. Sightings are not guaranteed, so bring binoculars and keep your distance.

7. Desert camping and stargazing

   Licensed commercial camps and resorts in the wider Sealine and Khor Al Adaid area offer overnight stays. Away from city lights, the night sky is clear and full of stars.

Tips for your visit

• Book a licensed tour unless you are an experienced dune driver with a second vehicle.
• Carry plenty of water, strong sunscreen, a hat and swimwear; shade is scarce.
• Mobile signal is unreliable in the dunes, so tell someone your route and return time.
• Avoid midday visits in summer; go at sunrise or late afternoon.
• If self-driving, carry a compressor to reinflate tyres before rejoining the highway.
• Take all rubbish home. This is a protected reserve and wildlife is sensitive to disturbance.
