Aspire Park, Doha

Overview

Aspire Park is the biggest green space in Qatar. It covers 88 hectares in Aspire Zone, west of central Doha, beside Khalifa International Stadium and the Torch hotel. The park has wide lawns, shady trees, a man-made lake with ducks and koi, a rubberised running track, play areas and several cafés. Entry is free, and the grounds are open around the clock.

Go for a morning run, an evening walk or a family picnic. In the cooler months, from about October to April, the park fills with joggers, cyclists, children and groups on picnic blankets. It is one of the few places in Doha where you can sit on real grass under big trees. Villaggio Mall is across the road, so it is easy to add shopping, food or indoor fun.

History and background

Aspire Park is part of Aspire Zone, the sports district that Qatar developed in Baaya, Al Rayyan, for the 15th Asian Games in 2006. The zone also holds Khalifa International Stadium, the Aspire Academy, the Hamad Aquatic Centre and the Aspire Dome. Aspire Zone Foundation manages the park today.

The Aspire Tower, now the Torch Doha hotel, stands at about 300 metres beside the park. It served as a giant torch for the 2006 Asian Games and is still the area's main landmark.

The park was planned as a green lung for the city. Its lake is often described as the only one in Qatar, and it now works as a small sanctuary for birds. The planting mixes common species with rarer trees, such as the floss silk tree from South America. Public art has also found a home here, including Perceval, a life-size bronze horse and cart by British artist Sarah Lucas.

What to see at Aspire Park

1. The lake

   A 3.37-hectare man-made lake sits at the heart of the park. Ducks, other birds and koi live here, and lakeside paths and cafés make it the most popular spot for a slow walk.

2. Running and walking track

   A 1.6km rubberised track loops through the park. It is easy on the knees and popular with runners before work and after sunset. Paths also branch off across the lawns.

3. Children's play areas

   Several playgrounds have swings, slides and climbing frames. There are also paths where children can ride bikes and scooters in safety, away from traffic, while parents watch from nearby benches.

4. Skate bowl and outdoor gym

   A large flow bowl draws skateboarders and BMX riders, while outdoor fitness stations let adults add strength work to a run. Both are busiest in the evenings.

5. Views of the Torch

   The 300-metre Torch tower rises beside the park and lights up at night. The lawns near the lake give one of the best ground-level views of it.

6. Perceval sculpture

   Look for Sarah Lucas's Perceval, a life-size bronze Shire horse pulling a cart loaded with oversized squash. It is a playful piece of public art and a favourite photo stop.

7. Picnics under the trees

   Big lawns and mature trees make this Doha's classic picnic park. Bring a blanket and food, or buy snacks, coffee and pancakes from the park cafés.

Tips for your visit

• Visit early morning or after sunset; the park has little shade at midday.
• In summer (June to September) it is too hot for most people during the day.
• Pets are not allowed in the park.
• Bring water. Cafés and restrooms keep shorter hours than the park itself.
• Pair your visit with dinner or cooling off at Villaggio Mall across the road.
• Weekday mornings are the quietest time for running or a calm walk.
• Check Aspire Zone's website for events and races that may close paths.
