3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum, Doha

Overview

The 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum opened in 2022 in Aspire Zone, right next to Khalifa International Stadium. It was billed as the first museum of its kind in the Middle East. Seven galleries take you from ancient games to modern stars, with Olympic torches, famous kit and trophies along the way. Qatar residents and children under 16 get in free.

The museum is aimed at everyone, not just sports fans. The last gallery is an interactive zone where you can test your speed, balance and reflexes. There is also an esports lounge on the top floor. Most visitors spend two to three hours inside. It is air-conditioned, family-friendly and easy to pair with a walk in Aspire Park or a trip to Villaggio Mall.

History and background

Qatar Museums built the museum as part of the country's long investment in sport, which includes the 2006 Asian Games and the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, opened it on 30 March 2022. It is a member of the Olympic Museums Network.

Spanish architect Joan Sibina designed the building. Five large rings, lit at night, wrap around the main structure as a nod to the Olympic symbol. Screens between the rings borrow from traditional Qatari patterns. A second building with diamond-shaped panels is linked by a glass walkway. In total the museum covers about 19,000 square metres.

The name 3-2-1 comes from the countdown at the start of a race. The museum drew more than 100,000 visitors in its first eight months and has since hosted visiting exhibitions and school programmes.

What to see at 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum

1. A global history of sport

   An early gallery traces how people have played and competed since the ancient world, from the first Olympic Games in Greece to the rise of modern professional sport.

2. Olympic Games gallery

   This gallery covers the modern Olympic movement. Look for a collection of Olympic torches from 1936 onwards, as well as medals, posters and kit from past Games.

3. Hall of Athletes

   Memorabilia from about 90 sports heroes fills this gallery. Items linked to names such as Pelé, Roger Federer, Michael Schumacher, Tony Hawk and Bruce Lee have been part of the displays.

4. Qatar's sporting story

   Two galleries look at Qatar itself: the major events it has hosted since the 2006 Asian Games and the growth of local sport, clubs and athletes.

5. Interactive activation zone

   The final gallery has hands-on stations where you can test your speed, reflexes and balance. It is the part children usually remember most, so leave time for it.

6. 3-2-1 Esports Lounge

   On the seventh floor, a dedicated lounge offers gaming and esports sessions for teenagers and adults. Check the museum website for current sessions, age limits and any extra charges before you go.

Tips for your visit

• The museum is closed on Tuesdays. On Fridays it opens only from 1:30pm.
• Bring your QID if you live in Qatar, as entry is free with it.
• Wear comfortable clothes and shoes for the interactive zone, while still covering shoulders and knees.
• Children under 12 must be with an adult at all times.
• Leave large bags in the cloakroom. No flash, tripods or selfie sticks.
• The café and gift shop can be used without a museum ticket.
